The main draw here, though, is taking an amateur golfer from hero to zero. There are a ton of other options, from shot types to where you strike the ball, and that makes for a strategy-rich game that rewards thoughtful risk-taking on larger holes. Gameplay will be familiar to anyone that has played a Tiger Woods PGA Tour game in the past, as you can once again use the analog stick (which weirdly defaults to the left, but can be switched to the right stick) to simulate making a drive. The top-notch presentation makes playing the game’s meticulously recreated courses even more enjoyable. There’s a fine line between respecting the sport and being pompous about it, and the game does a generally good job of threading the needle, even if its self-seriousness can be unintentionally funny. Electronic Arts leans hard into the seriousness of getting a small white ball into a distant hole with the utmost earnestness, which makes it all work. This includes the presentation since the production looks like a prestigious golf broadcast with hushed commentators chiming in about the intricacies of ball movement and giving useful commentary about putting greens. And while it lacks star power, nearly everything else about the game is on point. So unless you’re psyched to hit the links as Bryson DeChambeau, who didn’t make the cut for the Masters, then its roster doesn’t hold much appeal after its top five ranked players. This seems to be a combination of design and circumstance, as it focuses more on players creating their own golfer and climbing the ladder rather than using the top professionals, of which there aren’t many. Hence, if you’re wanting to build your dynasty and cement yourself as the best golfer of all time, it probably edges 2K here - but that’s not to say you can’t do the same with their title. After a lengthy hiatus after the misstep that was 2015’s Rory McIlroy PGA Tour, EA Sports is back into the golf game without placing a famous golfer in its title. I felt more like myself – with better character design options and swing customization – when I entered into tournaments. EA Sports does feel like a deeper dive, especially in Career Mode. From Career Mode to Quick Play and competitive matches online, both ensure you can play the way you want to. Another personal favorite is a post-apocalyptic Seattle course that’s straight out of The Last of Us.Īway from courses and licenses, there’s a plethora of ways to play in each title. Players can create environments based on whatever they like - just the other day I enjoyed a full 18 holes set at Hogwarts. However, its community-built courses are certainly a counter. That can lead to EA Sports PGA Tour feeling difficult and even merciless – but that is golf.ĢK23 can offer the same in terms of the presence of the PGA Tour and over 20 officially licensed courses, but its courses aren’t quite as refined as EA’s. Anyone who’s played real golf knows that’s how the sport goes: within seconds of playing your shot you’ll know whether it’s on the right tracks or headed for disaster. PureStrike technology makes nearly every shot (see our criticism of pitches and chips) feel rewarding or punishing depending on how you played the shot. There’s countless shot types to piece together, a wealth of information to take into account on every shot and ball physics that feel realistic. That’s why EA Sports PGA Tour takes the point here. It’s a slightly truncated version of golf, simple and quick (which does have its bonuses) but not exhaustive and granular. Within hours of picking up 2K23 I was able to sink chips frequently, whip my tee shots around obstructive trees to find the middle of the fairway and easily get within inches of the pin regardless of the hole, conditions and clubs. However, it can feel a little too easy to learn. We find it smooth and comprehensive as well as intuitive and easy to learn. It’s not that PGA Tour 2K23’s gameplay is poor in fact, it’s good.
